Will 'Day Zero' soon start happening to us all?

As Cape Town prepares for its first major water shortage in 100 years, water rationing has been introduced across the city, and the countdown to Day Zero (when water from the reservoirs will officially run dry) is happening. A combination of three years of very low rainfall, coupled with increasing consumption by a growing population means that the water is literally running out.
As water shortages are now striking the world's so called 'developed' communities, is it time to start planning for the notion that a 'Day Zero' - when the water runs out - will happen to us all?
