When did learning become a competition?

Many schools around the world (probably your own) see learning, in some ways, as competitive. Your exam scores are ranked against others’ in your class or year group and your development as a student is compared constantly with that of your fellow classmates.

Why is this? Why is learning competitive? Does it have to be this way? Is this healthy? What do you think?
